The Gap Year

Building Israel’s Next Generation

Who Are We?

In Israel, youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow they are the leaders of today.

AHARAI!
Leadership

empowers hundreds of teens and young adults from all regions and backgrounds to unlock their potential, lead social change, and take an active role in building a more equal, inclusive, and democratic society. We operate a range of pre-army leadership academies (Mechinot) that provide powerful educational journeys of 6 to 12 months before participants begin their military service.

Our Five Educational Pillars

Our model is built on five unique learning pillars that shape identity, leadership, and a deep commitment to the State of Israel:

01

Broad Horizons

Courses and discussions on Zionism, philosophy, gender, and economics to foster critical thinking.

02

Connection to Land

Outdoor excursions and treks that strengthen bonds with nature and build personal resilience.

03

Social Responsibility

Meaningful community service and volunteering to instill a sense of mutual commitment.

04

Preparation for Meaningful IDF Service

Physical training, mental readiness, and direct exposure to military commanders.

05

Diverse and Inclusive Group Living

Bringing together secular, religious, urban, and peripheral youth to live and grow together as one community.

From Adolescence to Leadership

In Israel, the year between high school and military service is a critical window. Aharai! transforms this time into a life-changing "Gap Year" of growth, Zionism, and social action through two main tracks:

Leadership Academies
(Mechinot)

Intensive residential programs where youth from the social and geographic periphery live together. They study Jewish identity, Zionism, and philosophy while undergoing rigorous physical and mental preparation for elite IDF service.

'Or' Academies

Five half-year programs serving 250 participants in cities like Jerusalem, Lod, and Dimona.

'Gal' Academy

A full-year leadership program with 200 participants across four campuses including Haifa and Akko.

'Beyachad' Academy

An inclusive half-year program for youth with and without special needs.

'Tiferet HaArazim'

A dedicated half-year academy specifically for Haredi youth.

Tech Leadership Academy

A cutting-edge program for teens with high technological potential.
Service Year
(Shnat Sherut)

A year of pure volunteerism. These young leaders defer their army service to live in underserved neighborhoods, running youth centers, mentoring at-risk kids, and strengthening the social fabric of Israel from the ground up.

Tamir Fellowship (Service Year)

50 fellows serving in 7 communities across the country.
Our Impact

4.3/5 for personal resilience and connection to Israeli society

4.2/5 for motivation to serve in meaningful leadership and officer roles in the IDF.

Why it Matters

This isn't just a break before the army. It is a "Leadership Laboratory" where

Peripheral youth close the gap with their peers from stronger backgrounds.

Social barriers are broken as participants from all walks of Israeli life live and work together.

Future Commanders are born graduates of these programs reach the highest ranks of the IDF and later, the Israeli economy and government.

"This year taught me that I am responsible for the person standing next to me. I entered the army not just to serve, but to lead."
